The City of Lausanne

Lausanne, the administrative centre of the Canton of Vaud, is located on the shores of the Lake of Geneva and in the heart of French-speaking Switzerland. Today, 250'000 people live in Greater Lausanne.

The upper town, where the medieval atmosphere is still maintained and where even the cathedral watchman continues to call the hours, is historical, the middle town is commercial, and the lower town is a bathing and tourist resort. From the very start of the 20th century, Lausanne has pursued its ambitions as a city for business, hospitality and contact. Its de luxe and large hotels have hosted writers, artists and politicians. As headquarter of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Museum, Lausanne was proclaimed Olympic Capital in 1994.

At the same time, of national and international fame, it is known as a service city (banks, insurance companies, tourism), headquarter of big companies, a centre of education (University, Federal Polytechnic, private and vocational schools), research centre (CHUV, UNIL, FPSL, Nestle), as well as a cultural centre (opera, theatres, dance, cineclub, museums).
